How to ‘Survive’ a Staycation in Johor Bahru With a Baby

December 27, 2017 by Michelle 1 Comment
Baby J Fanpekka

Early last week, we went for a three-night staycation in Johor Bahru, Malaysia with Baby J. This was the first time we took him to JB overnight. While planning for the trip, we were stressing over what to bring and how long to stay, as first-time parents do. In our previous visits, we had excellent experience with Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel, so we booked it at a super reasonable price for a 5-star hotel. I’ll talk more about the hotel later, and how awesome it really is! We also decided not to drive in, since it’s the holiday season and traffic will be rough. Continue Reading…

Our First Trip to Mount Alvernia 24-Hour Walk-In Clinic

Sick Baby J

Two nights ago, at about 10.30pm, we made our maiden trip to Mount Alvernia 24-Hour Walk-In Clinic. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Our trip totalled only 30 minutes.

That evening, Baby J started feeling warm to our touch. We took his temperature: 37.5 degrees Celsius. Ok, we thought, perhaps he’s teething. He seemed a little lethargic, so we let him nap for awhile before having our dinner. We’d go to Thomson Plaza almost every evening for our dinner because we are usually too busy to cook at home. Whenever we are there, Baby J would be very excited and scream a lot, to the amusement of many shoppers (and perhaps annoyance to some others). However, that evening, he was strangely quiet and sleepy. Continue Reading…

‘Tis the Durian Season! (A Durian Seller Review)

August 9, 2017 by Michelle Leave a Comment
Thick and creamy MSW durians!

When the durian season started last month, we were taken aback by the exorbitant prices. My durian-loving mummy, Grandma W, held back her cravings, and waited around for the prices to drop. While it has dipped a little since the start of this season, it is still pretty pricey compared to how it was back in March this year. So we waited, drooling every time a friend or relative shared a photo of their Mao Shan Wang (MSW) or Musang King durians. Tak boleh tahan (cannot take it) on Monday already, so we finally took her to our one-and-only trusted durian seller to pick out the durians on us.

Ah Hua, our durian guy, texts his customers his prices on a daily basis, sometimes twice in a day when he reduces his prices in the evening. Since it was a Monday, I was expecting him to drop his prices by the evening. Indeed, his lowered prices price list came just after 6pm. He was offering $22 per kg for 10kg of MSW (plus free mangosteens), and considering how everyone else is still buying theirs at close to $30 per kg, I excitedly told my mum that I would take her to pick out her durians that evening. So off we (Grandpa H, Grandma W, Daddy Sean, Mummy Michelle and Baby J) went! Continue Reading…
